Technique

Collar Choke from Side Control

OK, so today we decided to progress and move on from maintaining the top positions to making submission attempts.

Over the last week or so we have looked at a variety of collar chokes and have practised different ways of achieving the same results, the two below are just a couple of ways of arriving at the same destination:

Learning points:

1. Ensure you have full side control or knee on belly. Often you will see rookie mistakes stemming from attempting a submission without having full control of your opponent.

2.  Pressure.  Finishing your opponent from side control is one of the more challenging positions to attempt a submission, because unlike the mount or the back your are not in the optimum dominant position. Your hands have to move, so be sure to maintain pressure with other parts of your body - hips, shoulder, knee, chest to stop your opponent escaping.

You will learn a variety of submissions throughout your BJJ journey, the general advice is to drill them as much as possible, but then try to focus on maybe just one or two in each position.  This will allow you to really get to grips with it, pardon the pun, when you do this you can will have the beginnings of a 'game'.
